A Tube Dress with a little Extra
Tube dresses are probably the easiest way to make a dress for
Barbie. They are a great way to practice using double pointed needles but if you prefer you can knit one flat with one seam up the back.
I just get tired of all those strapless dresses so I came up with a Tube Dress with a slight modification.
Materials worsted weight yarn(I used lion Brand WoolEase), dbl pointed needles(sizes 4# or #5). Tube Skirt- this skirt can be made any length Using #3 needles cast on 32 stitches. Rnds 1- 4 Knit 1, Purl 1 ribbing. Rnd 5: Armhole: Knit 4, bind off 6, knit 12, bind off 6, knit 4. Rnd 6: knit 4, cast on 2, knit 12, cast on 2, knit 4.(24 st) Rnd 7-14:Knit 8 rows to waist line . Rnd 16-18: switch to ribbing for 3 rows Rnd 19: Knit. Rnd 20 : Knit 2, increase in the next stitch.(32 st) Rnd 21- your choice: continue until desired length. Last 2 rnds: K1,P1 ribbing Work even until desired length, anywhere from 2 inches to 6 inches. The skirt shown is 6 inches long. Switch back to #3 needles and work in ribbing for 2 rows. Bind off. These instructions are for circular knitting but it is easily knitted flat if you prefer. Just don't connect the stitches and sew up a seam to finish. Seed Stitch Sweater Seed Stitch pattern: knitted flat , even number of stitches Row 1: knit 1,purl 1across Row 2: purl1,knit 1across This will give you a dress similar to the one on the right. The dress on the left is on example of some of the ways you can vary the pattern- I used a garter stitch instead of ribbing on the neckline and I continued the ribbing down the skirt even as I increased it. Actually I only increased the number of knit stitches, ie I went from K1,P1 ribbing to K2, P1 to K3,P1ribbing. It also made it easy to space the increases.
